Scapa Flow

Scapa Flow, one of the worlds greatest natural harbours, looking across to the island of Hoy. Scapa Flow covers somewhere in the region of 325 sq km and was the main British naval base in both world wars. At the end of World War One the 74 ships of Imperial German Navy were impounded here, 53 of these ships were later scuttled by the Germans in 1919 to prevent them falling in to British hands. The salvage operation started in 1922 and was halted in 1939 by the start of WW2.
