Newport 2026 - Spirit of Progress

A Spirit of Progress carriage side nameboard in the Newport Railway Workshops. The Spirit of Progress was the first streamlined, air conditioned, all steel bodied train in Australia. The train originally ran on the Victorian broad gauge (5′ 3″) between Melbourne and Albury (1937-62) where passenger changed trains to continue their journey to Sydney. In 1962 the standard gauge (4′ 8½”) was finished through Victoria and the Spirit continued to run until 1986.

Victorian Railways (VR) S Class (Co-Co), S313 Alfred Deakin, pokes it’s nose out of number 6 road at the Newport Railway Workshops 2026 Open Day.

Clyde Engineering built the 18 S Class locomotives as a single-ended version of the VR B Class in two batches. S313, along with it’s class mates, was employed on express passenger services and fast freights.

A 1949 Series MM Morris Minor outside of the Newport Railway Workshop during the 2026 Open Day. This one was manufactured in the second year of the 23 year production run. The give aways are the low mounted headlights, split windscreen, and the painted panel in the bumper bar. In 1949 the choice was between a two door saloon, or a two door tourer (convertible).

Newport 2026 - RM74 The Tiger

RM74 is one of six Dodges converted for the Victorian Railways in 1936 to run on rails as Passenger Mail Motors (PMMs). The PMMs were build to carry up to ten passengers and over ½ ton of mail on passenger services along lightly used lines in Victoria. The PMMs were painted in diagonal chrome yellow and black stripes, which quickly earned them the nickname of “Tigers”.

These small rail motors were eventually replaced by the Walker Rail Motors or the service they ran was discontinued. RM74 is currently under restoration by the Daylesford Railway, and is seen here at the Newport Railway Workshops Open Day 2026.

Newport 2026 - R700

The first of the Victorian Railways (VR) R Class, R700, sits inside the Newport Railway Workshops awaiting restoration. North British Locomotive Co, Glasgow, in 1951 built the the R Class in 1951 to the 4-8-4 ‘Hudson’ wheel arrangement.

VR designed the R Class for express passenger services, and they enabled significantly reduced journey times. Only a year later diesel-electric locomotives were introduced and they quickly took over the passenger services. As a result the R Class only had short service lives, and saw out their days stored waiting to haul grain trains.
