J541 the abandoned locomotive in the Newport Railway Workshop as part of the 2026 Open Day. The J Class 2-8-0 was an update on the successful K Class. The J Class was built to be able to be converted from 5′ 3″ to standard gauge (4′ 8½”). To achieve this the J’s had their firebox above the footplate, meaning that the boiler sits much higher.
