Kimono with the Heron Maiden

The Heron Maiden is a kabuki song-and-dance performance. The play is based on a ghostly folktale, where a young man rescues a wounded white heron. The heron is transformed into a beautiful woman. They fall in love and get married. However, the man soon realises that she is still a heron and must disappear forever. This kimono depicts the beautiful young maiden: the white robe is her wedding dress, while the dark obi symbolises death.
