Grey’s Monument commemorates Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, the Prime Minister who passed the Great Reform Act. It was this Act that saw the start of the end of the rotten boroughs. The plaque on the base notes that Earl Grey “…WAS THE CONSTANT ADVOCATE OF PEACE AND THE FEARLESS AND CONSISTENT CHAMPION OF CIVIL AND RELIGIOUS LIBERTY.”
When Blue Glen Meats closed late last year they removed all of their signage and revealed this “gem” from the past.
Yackandandah is a small, sleepy town in north-eastern Victoria, that was once on the main highway from Melbourne to Sydney. Now it is well and truly bypassed, but with it’s Gold Rush heritage and 37 heritage listed buildings in the tree-lined main street the tourists keep coming. On a beautiful autumn day like this it’s easy to see why.
