Great Melbourne Telescope

An unexpected bonus of the visit to Scienceworks, the Great Melbourne Telescope, in the South Pumping Station. Volunteers are working to restore the telescope with tools and techniques that were available when it was built.

The telescope was built in 1868 and was the world’s second largest telescope. It was still in active use when it was damaged by bushfires at the Mt Stromlo Observatory in 2003. After the fire around 70% of the telescope remained in a usable condition.
