Newport 2026 - R711

Victorian Railways R Class R711 basks in the sunshine at the Newport Railway Workshops Open Day 2026. West Coast Railway restored R711 and used her on their regular steam-hauled Saturday service to Warrnambool. With the collapse of West Coast in 2004 R711 returned to Bendigo Council, and Steamrail became her custodian. In 2011 she returned to the mainline.

R711 was repainted in Victorian Railways Blue and Gold livery in time for the 2026 Open Day. This matches the Steamrail S-type coaches and they will be able to run a train reminiscent of the original Spirit of Progress.

R707 is resplendent in her black and red Victorian Railways livery alongside the grey undercoat of K160. The 70-strong 4-6-4 VR R class were designed for express passenger services, with deliveries from North British Locomotive Co. starting in 1951. Despite their technological advances like mechanical stokers and bar frames they were quickly supplanted by the new B Class diesel-electrics. At least two of them, R715 and R716 had a service life of only 4 years.

A 1949 Series MM Morris Minor outside of the Newport Railway Workshop during the 2026 Open Day. This one was manufactured in the second year of the 23 year production run. The give aways are the low mounted headlights, split windscreen, and the painted panel in the bumper bar. In 1949 the choice was between a two door saloon, or a two door tourer (convertible).

Newport 2026 - R700

The first of the Victorian Railways (VR) R Class, R700, sits inside the Newport Railway Workshops awaiting restoration. North British Locomotive Co, Glasgow, in 1951 built the the R Class in 1951 to the 4-8-4 ‘Hudson’ wheel arrangement.

VR designed the R Class for express passenger services, and they enabled significantly reduced journey times. Only a year later diesel-electric locomotives were introduced and they quickly took over the passenger services. As a result the R Class only had short service lives, and saw out their days stored waiting to haul grain trains.
