Water Tower Clock

Water Tower Clock

The much moved Water Tower Clock in the main entrance to Southern Cross / Spencer Street Station. With the strong backlighting and the bright LCD screens underneath trying to get a reasonable photo was challenging.

Without this Water Tower Clock primer from Marcus at Waking Up In Geelong I would have continued to keep on walking past this piece of Melbourne’s history. The clock started at the original Flinders Street station, and moved to Princes Bridge when Flinder Str was rebuilt. This was followed by a move to Spencer Street station, followed by a move to Scienceworks and it’s eventual relocation and restoration here in 2014.

Flinders Street Station from the less glamorous western end, highlighting the clock tower at the end of Elizabeth Street. Zoe and I had a quick trip into the city for a visit to the Imigration Museum. The sun was out but the wind was bitter, a relief after the rain earlier in the week.

Great Australian Clock - Queen Victoria Building

The other clock in Sydney’s QVB – the Great Australian Clock. When it was completed in 2000 this was the world’s largest turret clock. It weighs in a 4 tonnes, and measures ten metres tall. This clock tells the history of Australia from both an Indigenous and Western perspective with 27 paintings, animation and special lighting.
