Glendalough means the valley of two lakes. Here is one of them, the Upper Lake from the patch of land separating the two lakes. Originally the valley had just one lake, but where the Poulanass River plunges into the valley from the side the lake has silted-up splitting the lake into two.

Fitzgeralds Avoca
The sprawling Fitzgerald’s Pub in Avoca, one of the main stars of the TV series Ballykissangel. For another view of the “Fitzgerald’s” sign here.
Glendalough Round Tower
The round tower at Glendalough stands at an impressive 33m.
Round Towers are found almost exclusively in Ireland, there are three others in Scotland and one on the Isle of Man. It is believed that they were used as bell towers, refuges from invaders, or as monastic strongrooms. Whatever purpose they were used for they sure make memorable landmarks in the Irish countryside.
